Starting the first day of anything is typically difficult, well at least for me it is. So, writing this post is no different. I have looked at this blank page for a little over week trying to determine what to write about. I mean, I always knew I would write about me and why I have chosen to write about my experiences, thoughts and feelings about my career in Higher Education. But what would I write that would keep someone reading this post or coming back for more? Honestly, I don’t know.
I do know I’m Jeffery Alexander Jr born in raised in South Los Angeles County, CA (moved around a lot so saying I’m from South LA is just easier). I have been a Student Affairs Professional for a little over 6 years now and I have many lessons, challenges, heartbreaks and successes (hence the name The Feisty Educator). Sharing what I have learned and what I am continuing learn might help someone else. Also, I always felt like its selfish to horde knowledge that you have obtained. What is Student Affairs? Well what I tell my family and friends is Student Affairs is the part of college that is not class. It’s the fun stuff and it’s also the real stuff. It’s what teaches you about yourself and life outside of academics.
What else do I know? I know I decided to write because I have been out of practice and want to strengthen my writing skills (many of my early post are going to be filled with terrible grammar as I get back into the practice of writing). I know I always have something to say and blogging is the perfect platform to express my thoughts. Lastly, hopefully I can challenge, inform, inspire and empower (stole this from my mission statement) whoever might stumble across a blog of mine one day.
I’m not the most well versed person in this field by a long shot, I am rarely the smartest person in the room. I am growing and learning and will never pretend to be smarter than I truly am. This blog is simply my thoughts and my thoughts alone. I will never speak for my profession, my institution or anyone else.
I think that’s it for now, just had to get my first one out of the way.
